「翻訳の葬式」The Death of Translation

「人間の翻訳は死ぬのか？」
──アート専門の通訳・翻訳を10年にわたり担ってきた翻訳コレクティブが、人間による翻訳行為の死に向き合うプロジェクト。

人と人、文化と文化のあいだに立つ翻訳（および通訳）行為は、単純な言葉の置き換えにとどまらず、異なる世界をつなぐ創造／想像的な実践である。しかし生成AIが圧倒的な速度と「精確さ」で言語を横断し、人間に固有の要素が効率の悪いものとして切り捨てられようとしている今、人間による翻訳行為はその存在価値をおびやかされている。

これまでアート専門の通訳・翻訳者のコレクティブとして10年間活動してきたArt Translators Collectiveは今回、あえて人間の翻訳の「葬式」を掲げ、パフォーマンス、ワークショップ、絵画など、自らが企画・出演する作品創作を通じて、終わりと向き合うことでしか見えてこない未来への創造／想像力を引き出そうと試みる。

人間の翻訳の「死」をめぐる問いを多様な視点から考察するこのプロジェクトは、翻訳にとどまらず、人間のあらゆる創造行為 ──失敗やずれ、ためらいをも含めた「不完全さ」そのもの── の意味や価値を再考する、人類全体への問いとして展開するだろう。

“Is this the death of translation?”
As their collective enters its second decade, a group of translators and interpreters specialized in the arts explores the loss of this human activity.

Mediating person-to-person and culture-to-culture, translation and interpretation extend beyond mere conversion of language: they represent creative and imaginative practices that connect disparate worlds. Yet in a contemporary moment where generative AI traverses language with overwhelming speed and “precision”—a moment where, in the name of efficiency, we move to do away with fundamentally human qualities—human-led translation faces existential threat.

As a group of translators and interpreters specialized in the arts, Art Translators Collective now enters its second decade. In this program, they boldly proclaim a “funeral” for human translation, using performances, workshops, paintings, and other original works to harness creative and imaginative power for a vocation whose future is made visible only by confronting its end.

Is this the death of translation? Or might this project’s question reach further still? Expanding beyond translation and addressed to all of humanity, it reconsiders the meaning and value of every form of human creative activity: its mistakes, slippages, hesitations—the very essence of imperfection.
