Alex was born in London, where he was raised on Studio Ghibli films by a Dutch father and a Franco-Swiss mother. He studied for a bachelor’s in Japanese at the University of Oxford, as part of which he lived for half a year in Takarazuka and one year in Tokyo. After writing his dissertation on Shohei Imamura, he embarked on a career in journalism, focusing on cinema. He continues to translate from Japanese (and French) to English, and never ceases to marvel at the Japanese language’s richness in puns.
